Equiping Scholars and Leaders

Critical to the unique success of Act Six is the training and preparation program that scholars undertake prior to heading to campus.

Extensive Preparation

Selecting scholars in the fall, affiliate staff lead each cadre through an extended training program where scholars meet together on a weekly basis to:

  • hone academic and leadership skills
  • build critical friendships and grow as a team
  • nurture a sense of purpose and mission
  • wrestle with important and challenging issues

In addition to the weekly meetings, the cadre makes at least two more visits to the campus and may participate in additional retreats and conferences. This extensive preparation reduces the social and academic isolation that many underrepresented students commonly confront.

Training Themes

The Act Six training curriculum is organized around seven essential themes that capture the values of the initiative:

Act Six Training Themes
  • Vision
  • Leadership
  • Service
  • Diversity
  • Community
  • Preparation
  • Transformation

While exploring and integrating Christian perspectives on these themes is a central part of the training, Act Six staff demonstrate genuine respect for those scholars who do not share their religious perspectives.

Agents of Transformation

Act Six scholars come to college uniquely prepared to engage the campus with an established support system and a sense of purpose as service-minded leaders and agents of transformation.
